Timeless garden finials : When More Is Better

Known today are the many uses of the finial, but garden finials have been known to make quite the impression, placed in an area where it is up close and personal, rather than at the top of a weather vane or on the side or top of a building. In the midst of many gardens, we can be sure to find a flagpole, so it’s only fair to mention the decorative sense of a garden finial sitting at the apex of such a majestic item. In this sense, a ball styled finial is usually placed at the top of a stationary flagpole, and the actual finial is then connected to this. As urban legend would have it, this sort of finial would have within it a flare, a lighter, and a razor. These items were placed within the finial in order to destroy the illustrious flag in the case of an attack, and possible capture of the flag. Another of these urban legends make the claim that instead of the previously mentioned items, matches, a knife, and a bullet were placed within the finial so that, again, in the case of the possible capture of the flag, the last soldier standing can continue the fight, and if necessary, destroy the flag, then take his own life with the bullet. Not a nice picture, but that’s how it’s told.

The garden finial is an architectural design that is more commonly found carved in the many types of fashionable stone. The finial is then placed at the apex, the end, or at the corner of a weathervane, a building, or a curtain rod. Finials are quite common on furniture such as chairs, bed posts, clocks, lampshades and even at the ends of the coveted souvenir silverware. Finials are also fashioned in various types of metal giving it a function rather than just for decoration, such as a lightning rod. Another function which might have been abandoned in these modern times was for the protection and deterring of broom riding witches that might have had the inclination to land on some sorry superstitious soul’s house. This decorative piece has since broken free of such fashions and functions, and has emerged as garden finials.

It is almost impossible to travel through any one of America’s great cities, and not see the classic lawn furniture, the classic porch swing, or even the classic garden arbor, but it’s not always that you’ll run into a house decorative so splendidly with garden finials. Garden finials have a sense of royalty about them that brings this out with just about anything that can be found in a person’s yard. Garden benches are a nice addition to a garden, but imagine the look of this same garden bench once garden finials are added to it. You can be sure that as beautiful your lawn and garden are already, that garden finials placed strategically around your yard will do nothing less than satisfy the inspiration and admiration of the common passer-by and peer alike.
